Living into Open Space:
Poems from the Road to Nowhere

 ...
(winter solstice)
 ...
the season is dark
but the spirit is moving
look for it now
and breathe it in
breathe it in for
the first time
again and again
as it grows
in your body
let it go
in the world
God is here
God is us
and we are
enough
 ...

 ...
(after the fall)
 ...

I want to stand on the rock of the mountain top
embraced by the vastness of midnight.

I want to be patient enough to stand there forever
and restless enough to step off into mid-air.

I want the strength to cling and wings to fly,
but can I just sit for now?

And wherever I am and whenever it comes,
I want to greet the next light with one bright smile
and nothing to regret.

...but why so wanting? Am I not this already?
Even as I'm clinging in mid-air and flying into rock?

 ...

 ...
(the speed of light)
 ...
new boundaries, separations
new mergings, too
confused and confusing
dissolving and pounding
crying OUT
more alone than ever, ever
and got to let go--
let go of what?
can't do it alone
or i'll die
'cause it ALL needs to move
and everything all at once
just got got GOT to get out
but where is she next?
pulsation
lost
and held
i need to express --
who's here?
letting go
now
hold me
catch me
it's over!
yet more to give
so where does it end?
and how to say?
as i we am are
dying to become
 ...

 ...
(space)
 ...
i danced in space
then rushed to record
all the stories we told but
that justification IS
what the old world WAS
suffice
it then to say
that i am rediscovery
an easy happy peace
i've only ever known
on the morning after
peering into the abyss
of a midnight death
and life in space
wanting only
now and ever to be
with you
in space
 ...

 ...
(over the edge)
 ...
i walked into the darkness
and stepped over the edge
i should have known--
this
might
be
my
last
human
sensation
butt
first
you
know
later in the hospital
for just one moment
i glimpsed all human suffering
as uncertainty and...
then i wasn't so sure
nodding into the darkness
slipping over the edge
and maybe i did know
because
it's made all the difference
which is different
from making
it easy
and
that's
okay
for
now
 ...

 ...
(digitalis)
 ...
is that
your heart
space i'm falling into
or my heart holding you
as summer and everything
is new and playing surfing
rocking rolling swimming
naked in the city wild and
swirling open in space
every touching
story begins
with a
click
inspired
by a story
on a website
written in minutes
delivered in seconds
and posted next to her
stories for all to see
within hours
of first
kiss
 ...
