SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION:

Working with a group of at-risk children, I found that many of them were unable to select their own work. I was afraid that I would stifle them by doing too much directing. I didn't want them to become too dependent on me.

The participants in my group suggested that I direct the child to the math or language shelf and then let them select which work they wanted to do. This would still give the child their own freedom of choice but within boundries so they may feel more comfortable.
